The 14th Annual Scarecrow Fest is Saturday, September 13 in downtown Delavan. Everyone is invited to this community-wide, family-oriented event that will showcase dressed and decorated Scarecrows throughout historic downtown Delavan, and beyond. Around Labor Day you will begin to see Scarecrows popping up on the light poles in downtown Delavan. All the scarecrows will be tagged and ballots will be printed. The public will pick their favorite scarecrows, and a winner is crowned. Throughout the month of September, Downtown Delavan will have “Scarecrows on Parade”.
This year’s festival will be better than ever! Scheduled activities include: pumpkin painting, free children’s face painting, live music by Cheryl Niemo & the Down Home Boys, Live music by Cedric Square, vendors in the park, sidewalk sales, food, and our Fourth Annual pie & cake auction! You can even build your own scarecrow and take it home with you. The nominal $10 fee includes supplies and help to build your scarecrow. The Great Delavan Duck Raffle also takes place during Scarecrow Fest. It is approaching quickly, so be sure to purchase your raffle tickets today! The winners will be determined at 2:30 during Scarecrow Fest. The raffle tickets are $2, or 3 for $5; they can be purchased at many downtown businesses, including Bradley’s Department Store, Lauren’s Antique & Art Centre, Lubick Gallery, Gill Family Chiropractic, Brick Street Market, Avant Bicycle Supply, Del-Mart, Remember When, and more. First Place is $200, Second Place is $100, Third Place is $50, plus there are lot’s more prizes to win, thanks to the local downtown businesses who donated them. You can also participate in the Parks Department Amazing Race or watch as a mural is painted on one of the downtown buildings. In June of 2015 Delavan is hosting an international Walldogs event where 15 to 18 murals will be painted downtown in 4 days. One is being done early, to help get the community excited about the event. Your wonderful day of family fun and memories will be concluded with a concert by Ripple Effect and Pink Fraud at the Phoenix Park Bandshell.

Start thinking about your scarecrow design now! Lots of scarecrows are wanted in downtown Delavan! Anyone can make a scarecrow; they’re easy to make! Don’t think you can make a scarecrow? Here are some simple instructions to help you with your creation. To make a scarecrow, take two strong sticks, one about six feet long and one about two feet long and nail the short one to the long one to form a cross. Stuff an old skirt and blouse or a pair of overalls or jeans with just about anything and tie them to the two sticks that form the cross. For the head use whatever you want- a stuffed piece of material, a jug, a pot, a ball… let your imagination run wild! You will want to anchor the head to the top of the stick frame with a small nail or tack. Draw a face on it with markers or paint, or leave it plain….again be creative and do whatever you want.
The scarecrow winners from 2013 include: Third Place Tie: “The Almost Invisible Scarecrow” by Lauren’s Antique & Art Centre (left), “Lucy in Disguise with Diamonds” by Rebecca J. Jutz (center) and “Comet Codie” by Remember When (right).
Now that you have the basic scarecrow, you can add any details you would like…perhaps a hat, a jacket, gloves, boots, hair, etc. For motion you can add streamers, a scarf, a flag, or a stick. Create noise by hanging a tin can with pebbles in it from the scarecrows hand. Stand back and enjoy your new creation….the object of the event is to have fun, so have fun creating your scarecrow and showcase it downtown Delavan! Stop in or call Remember When (728-8670) for a Scarecrow Application, or go to discoverdelavan.com and print your own off!
