The Delavan Downtown Business Association is asking the community to get involved and make a scarecrow or two for their thirteenth annual Scarecrow Fest! You can make a Traditional Scarecrow, or get creative and make a Contemporary Scarecrow! Scarecrows will be accepted from Friday, August 30 through Tuesday, September 10. Anyone can enter a Scarecrow; businesses, organizations, or individuals can enter downtown Delavan’s Scarecrow Contest. The entry fee is $5/scarecrow (for children under 13, the entry fee is $3/scarecrow). The “Parade of Scarecrows” will begin in early September and end in early October. A minimum of two prizes will be awarded to the top scarecrows. Winners will receive a Remember When gift certificate.
Start thinking about your scarecrow design now! Lots of scarecrows are wanted in downtown Delavan! Anyone can make a scarecrow; they’re easy to make! Don’t think you can make a scarecrow? Here are some simple instructions to help you with your creation. To make a scarecrow, take two strong sticks, one about six feet long and one about two feet long and nail the short one to the long one to form a cross. Stuff an old skirt and blouse or a pair of overalls or jeans with just about anything and tie them to the two sticks that form the cross. For the head use whatever you want- a stuffed piece of material, a jug, a pot, a ball… let your imagination run wild! You will want to anchor the head to the top of the stick frame with a small nail or tack. Draw a face on it with markers or paint, or leave it plain….again be creative and do whatever you want.
Now that you have the basic scarecrow, you can add any details you would like…perhaps a hat, a jacket, gloves, boots, hair, etc. For motion you can add streamers, a scarf, a flag, or a stick. Create noise by hanging a tin can with pebbles in it from the scarecrows hand. Stand back and enjoy your new creation….the object of the event is to have fun, so have fun creating your scarecrow and showcase it downtown Delavan!

Delavan’s Downtown Business Association called on Delavanite Peggy Murphy, owner/photographer of Austin Studio for this puzzle project. Peggy is an incredibly creative, award- winning photographer- she photographs weddings, families, children and local scenes. Five of her photos of downtown landmarks were chosen to be used for the puzzle. The puzzle includes the Phoenix Park Bandshell, the Arboretum, the downtown clock, the elephant & clown statues in Tower Park, and the hanging flower baskets & American flags on the street lights. We chose these landmarks as they help define our downtown’s charm and beauty, and honor our circus history.
Peggy believes creating a photographic memory should be fun, comfortable and a personal experience. Peggy was the perfect photographer for this fun photographic memory! The Downtown Business Association thanks Peggy for allowing us to use her photos for this project.
The American-made souvenir puzzle allows visitors to take their trip home with them and provides a great activity for families to do together during overnight trips. The puzzle is 10-1/2” by 16” when put together and has 160 interlocking pieces.
